After some days of training in this beautiful spot, all the athletes finally arrived in Sougia.

Herbert finally missed one attempt of VWT World record attempt to -142m due to bad equalization.
Anna Did a nice 80m VWT new German Record, with her usual nice smile.

I personnaly experienced a bad series of training dives, always limited by equalization.

First day of competition
The list of athletes is impressive for this first edition of the competition
The winner of the competition will be the one totalizing the max amount of points.

Wave and current are present, the conditions are far from ideal.

For this first day, Bérangère begins first and does a very nice 41m in CWT. Congratulations Bérangère !
Anna fails her dive, as well as robert.
Julie comes with a 68m announce. That's a potential new French record for women... That she easily does. Well done Julie !

After some local greek freedivers diving (check their results on the competition site), I realize a good 76m dive, as announced.
I am happy with this 'easy equalized' dive. I am finally surprised by the bottom weight with some more equalization to go. I will try more the next days...

Following me, William misses is 90m in CWT attempt, with an early turn.
Alexei does a very nice 91m in CWT setting up a new Russian record.
Guillaume, just after him does an easy 92m dive... very good level these days for Guillaume.

Here comes Natalia ... 95m attempt in CWT, that's huge, and the waves and current are strong. We know she can make it !
And she finally does it. We meet her coming back on the beach. Looking a bit tired but very happy ! Incredible Natalia, congratulations to her !
Next step the 100m ? on Sunday ?

Carlos misses is 98m FIM try with a good samba (4'20'' dive a bit too long ?) , and Herbert does not show off for is 104m CWT dive.

Still 2 days of competition to go, The next days will be hot !

These 2 last days were full of informations and very nice dives...

after a day of rest I decided to go back to training.
I headed for a 84m dive in CWT. Unfortunately I had to turn earlier because of poor equalization. Finally, my gauge will show 79.3m. Not so far from the bottom plate. I feel very easy about apnea time, but still to focus on my mouthfill technique.
The same day, Natalia did a 94m dive in CWT. Her dive was succesful, but she apparently suffered of embolism while reaching the surface. People said that she was doing strange uncoordinated movements.
It looks like that it is not the first time she is having this kind of severe trauma. A recent IRM showed spots on her brain due to these 'bad' dives.
The future will tell us if she keeps on diving like that or not.
Endangering her health for sport.

Julie did an easy 57m dive following her improvment, and Bérangère is working more and more on her depth technique, taking time to go deeper.

Yesterday, 2 freedivers were on the focus : Stavros and William.
Stavros did a succesful new National Greek record in No limits to 126m.
Congratulations to him !
William failed to reach 120m in Variable, he had to stop to 111m due to bad timing on equalization. his goal was to set-up a new canadian record in VWT

Herbert is training each day, spearfishing the evening. No day rest. But he is experiencing some equalization problems. he then does not go as deep as he would like to. Incredible how he can afford spending so much time in water doing so much efforts, without being tired...

Anna is doing an new National record attempt in VWT today.

What comes next :
Carlos Coste just arrived and is apparently here for a new WR (world record) in FIM.Guillaume is also motivated by FIM (coming tonight) , as well as Herbert :-) !

Yesterday, after training i went back to spearfishing with Alexis. We had the chance to find a nice Dentex spot.
A 20-30 school of 6 kg dentex were waiting for us at 30m. I unfortunately missed a shot on one of them. Alexis missed also a big grouper. We will come back later...

As for the dentex, resting the day and fishing at dusk and dawn, I am resting today
Tomorrow will be a training attempt day

Welcome to Sougia,
small fisherman village from the South of crete.

I arrived 3 days ago, with Bérangère (Natalia Molchanova joined us at the airport), and we are immediately welcomed by Stavros and all the freedivers team. William Winram is here with Herbert Nitsch, Robert King and Anna.

They are all eating huge pieces of grouper taken by the safety divers of the competition. All  experienced spearfishermen from Crete.

What a wonderful welcome to come and eat 'steacks' of groupers and Feta salad in a warm wind coming from the sea. Pure pleasure.

We are all here to attend the 1st international mediterranean meeting organized by Stavros Kastrinakis, and to train and have fun all together.

Conditions are perfect to train : 24°c water temp, more than 40m of visibility (!!!).
All the safety set-up is here and perfectly managed.

After a 1st day of acclimatation, with small dives. I realize an easy 74m dive in CWT. Good feeling and pleasure. the light is incredible down there.

We are in the Big Blue

The dark blue is perfect and the sea is calm, the visibility is incredible.
I like that very much.

on my side Natalia does a good 80m in CWT dive... Target is clearly 100m for her, soon.
Julie does an easy 45m dive, and Bérangère tries to find her mark here, 34m... Deeper later.
Herbert does a 108m dive in VWT, with some technical problems (lanyard blocked), bad feeling for him :-(

Maybe the smell and the place reaminds me my childhood, when we were coming in greece in summer vacations, going from a fisherman village to another.I know theses places and i suddenly remember some words of greek that i can use.

After some hours I make friend with the very nice and gentle greek team. Spearfishermen recognize each other soon ;-). We will soon go spearfishing together in the depth of the crete to try to get some big fishes to eat...

The 21st and 22nd of June, AIDA France was organizing the AIDA French National selection for the next Team World Championship.

This selection were taking place in Nice, and were organized by Gregory Piazzola with the help of the CIPA.

We were a bunch of freedivers that came for these selections. The weather was perfect.
The selections were based on a CWT performance to be made during the 2 days.

on this picture (courtesy Greg. Piazzola), you can recognize (from right lo left 1st rank first) : Morgan Bourch'is, Gregory Piazzola, Cyril Paulet, christian Maldamé, Patrick Poggi, then Francine Kreiss, Berangère Duclos, Guillaume Nery, Julie Gautier.
Missing on the picture : William Winram.

After the bad weather conditions of May and June, a few of us were not so well trained. But, the level was here.
For these selections, the more important was to be clean and safe. So everybody played it safe

Here are the official performances realized :

for the women:
Berangere Duclos, Julie Gautier, Francine Kreiss, Solenn Launay

for the men :
Christian Maldame, Guillaume Nery, Morgan Bourc'His, William Winram

Due to their nowadays results (season 2008), Berangere Duclos and Guillaume Nery are now the "alternate athlete". The final alternate athletes will de designated in Sharm El sheik.

We are a good team, almost the same as in 2006 (bronze medal in Hurghada)...And Now ... Let's go to Sharm el sheik !

Mercredi 11 juin 2008
After some weeks of rest and good training, here are the Swiss Indoor Championships.
Organized in Prilly (Lausanne) by the imersion profonde club.
Marcello de Matheis and Marco Melileo were the main organizers of the event.
For judges we could find : Sebastien Nagel, Frederic Busslinger, Marcello and Marco.

Very good atmosphere with the good 'swiss freediving team'., some were missing but the spirit and the friends were here...Some German came also to participate...

A good championship for me, even if my performances were not as high as I was expecting...
  • I finally win the DNF with 125m,
  • I win also the DYN with 166m
  • And finish 2nd of the static with 7'00, Nicolas Guerry does a very nice 7'34'' (just at the limit for him, but still OK with the protocol, I was his coach ;-) )
I was first in the overall ranking, but there was no overall ranking ;-) !

The club des dauphins members take 7 medals in the men ranking, leaving 2 bronzes for the others.
In the women, the Zuri girls take the medals (Claudia Rollero makes a very nice 150m in DYN)

Here is the video of my 125m DNF performance (source J. Boillod) : link

Next step for me are the French National Selection for the next World Championship, that will take place in Sharm el sheik, beginning of september.

French national selection are in Nice the 21/22nd of June. One depth attempt to ensure a place in the team.
The team is quite open, even if the favorites are already known : Guillaume Nery, William Winram (newcomer with a french passport), Morgan Bourch'is and myself. But Patrick Poggi will probably come also and some others might join...
The games are open... May the best be selected ! I will keep you informed !

Lundi 5 mai 2008
This 1st may week-end I decided to take a break and have some fun diving in the south of France.

I headed to Hyères with Bérangère Duclos (member of French National team) to meet Cyril Paulet (coach of the french national team) to have some fun freediving, spearfishing and why not some deep dives on the famous shipwrecks 'Donator' and 'Grec', if the weather was nice...

Finally, the conditions were exceptionnal. no wind or almost, no current, and perfect sun. The water was slightly cold (15°C), and visibility was limited to 15m... But nothing really bad.

After a first day of training, back to depth (40m).
We decided to go on the Donator shipwreck ...

From 37m to 51m depth

in french the full description of the wreck :
link

After some training dives to find it... We had a lot of fun diving down and having fun visiting it ... freediving.

We sometimes used an underwater scooter.

And the scuba divers, in the place were really astonished to see us there ;-) !

Unfortunately, my video cam was out of order... And I can only show you a picture taken fron a web site.

The vision of such a wreck... freediving deep is incredible !

In a quiet time, I also had the pleasure to see the huge schools of fishes living there... Sars, Dorades grises, Dentex, Serioles...
Enormous ones and beautiful views...

Diving here is a bit like landing on mars... You know that almost nobody has been here like that. The feeling is incredible !

The next day, we did both the Donator AND the Grec ...

The Grec is another shipwreck some 100m far from The donator.
link (in french)

Another beautiful day freediving and discovering the treasures of our Mediterranée...

Thanks to Cyril for the Coaching and safeties on these deep dives... Staying 1 minute at 40m needs to be secured in a good way...
Thanks to Bérangère for her help on the boat  and.. on land !

See you soon for new adventures !!
